New Series // #HandmadeHomemade2013: Napkins

Ah, finally I'm starting the series that was on my list since we rang in the new year: #HandmadeHomemade2013 (you can follow along on instagram with that hashtag).

Ever since my return from Cambodia, I had it on my heart to live life more simply and to spend less on convenient products - plus I love that my mom and grandma taught me to stretch a penny! And by stretching a penny I'm talking about my grandma washing, drying and reusing Ziploc bags!

So, here's to a year of exploring ways to make the penny go farther and to making handmade/homemade items and products!

Things on my list include:

  • cloth napkins
  • salsa
  • hummus
  • detergent
  • dish soap
  • candles
  • cleaning products
  • ketchup
  • tomato sauce

..... any other suggestions? leave me a comment with an idea!

Last night, I stayed up to sew my cloth napkins. I was inspired by other bloggers that were finding great Etsy shops for their fabric. I ordered mis-matched fabrics and made napkins!

I just have to pick out a neon color thread! It's more fun!
I folded the hem only once and pinned it down - should have done a double hem to stop the fray,
but you live you learn!

and sew...it's pretty simple

oh, hello spring!

I really enjoy watching the landscape around me change with every season. It's a visual reminder that our lives, our experiences, our joys, our pains - they will change. Not only will they change but in difficult times we begin to grow.

Let's welcome in spring together...

thrift store treasures // globes, I like globes

A few weeks ago, my friend and I went thrifting together but our first stop was at this antique mall. I saw globes that I liked - they were more than $30 so I stopped liking them!

I really wanted a globe. That sounds silly, I know but I remember playing with a globe when I was a bit younger. I would lay my finger down on the globe and spin the globe. The exciting part was when the globe stopped and wherever my finger was, well duh, that's where I was going to live. It  was fun!

Anyway, my friend and I stopped at a thrift store and within minutes she held up a globe for me! $7 - now we're talking and now it's in my home! I heart thrift stores. Why shop anywhere else?!

Oh, and I found a scale. "Is it accurate - does it work?" Oh husband, I don't know. I just liked it and it was $2.

sometimes I just need a clear answer

Saturday morning, like 7 a.m. morning, I sat across one of my dearest friends and we chatted about our lives, our art, our passions, our families, our pains, our joys...I realized that I'm in Denver for this conversation right now, but "God what's your plan with Steve and I...?" was the question left in my heart unanswered.

After breakfast, I sat in my quiet living room (Steve likes to sleep-in) asking God, "Why Denver? Why are we here? What's your plan for us here? Sometimes, all I need a clear answer..." And on Sunday morning during the sermon, the pastor spoke these words, "You are all sitting here because God wants to use you in reviving this city: your neighbors." And in that moment, I truly felt it in my heart that God was talking to me. It was an overwhelming feeling combined with peace knowing that God gave me a clear answer. He knew that I needed a little boost, a little motivation because life can beat up on you.

Whether you have a faith foundation or not, I do hope it stirs something within you. I know that after God answered my question/doubt and it left me desiring more of Him : Here are the thoughts that I am processing this week,

  1. What do I do with God's confirmation? I need to trust that He has equipped us to be ambassadors of His love, compassion and mercy. And how will I pursue this...?
  2. Conviction to examine how I love others. Do I love my "neighbors" the way I love myself? I show myself a lot of grace, room for mistakes, and I make sure I am comfortable. Do I do the same for my neighbors - the people Jesus died for? YIKES, I'm not sure I do!!

// Isaiah 61 //
The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor and the day of vengeance of our God,to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion—
to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, instead of a spirit of despair.
